Weekend Away

We had our first overnight outing away this weekend. We went to my parents cottage at Big Star Lake. The weather was gorgeous! Very windy, but warm. The guys even put part of the dock in the water! Daniel did very well. He enjoyed looking around at all of the 'new' surroundings. He loved the fresh air and hanging' out with Nana & Papa.

Daniel is growing each day. He's doing a little better at nights. The feedings are still every 3 hours, but he's falling asleep quicker. He is so aware of the things around him. Daniel loves looking at lights. We stopped at Meijer for a couple of items today and he couldn't get enough of the big lights in there. The happiness didn't last long though--he got fussy as we were checking out. We quickly made it to the car before the crying began. We have been able to figure out what each cry means. There is the loud, all-out cry for hunger--there is the fussy, almost a cry for a dirty diaper--and there is the high-pitched squeal along with grunts when there is gas or something needs to be pushed out. :)

We had a fun afternoon today visiting Aunt Kelly and cousin Gracie. We all went to Sarah's house after that to take a walk with the twins. The seven of us took up half the road with all of the strollers. Very fun. It has been so nice now that we can get out of the apartment. The white walls get a little boring in here sometimes. :)

We have had a great couple of weeks--hard to believe that Daniel will be a month old on Friday! We have had lots of visits from friends and family and we look forward to introducing Daniel to more of you! Here are some recent PHOTOS of the past couple of weeks.

He's Growing!

Daniel had his two week check-up today. He is growing! At our last appointment on April 3, he weighed in a 6 lbs. 6 oz. Today he came in at a whopping 7 lbs. 8 oz.! We had a feeling that he had been gaining some weight--his face is filling out and that extra pound really makes a difference when holding him.
Our nights are getting a little better--he still eats every three hours (like clockwork), but he is actually sleeping in between the feedings. We are still exhausted, but love every minute with our little man. We've noticed that this week he has started to become much more aware of his surroundings. He loves to look around during his awake time--I think he likes to see the contrast of colors, textures, etc. Tonight he was very content laying on his playmat. He loved listening to his music while checking out the lion and butterflies hanging overhead. He's a pretty cool little dude!

Due Date

Today is my due date! I get weekly email reminders from babycenter.com--today is 40 weeks! I am pretty happy that our little man decided to come 12 days early. He has brought us so much joy already!

The two of us got out today for the first time (other than his doctors appt. last week). We went to visit the VanDevens. Carter and Clara were very happy to meet their new little friend. It will be fun for them to grow up together!

One Week!

Where did this week go? Exactly one week ago our little guy entered the world. We love being parents, but this week has definitely been all about survival and figuring out 'life.' Daniel doesn't know the difference between day and night yet. Hopefully we will get a routine down sooner than later. He is a little suggle bug--loves to be held.

Some of you were asking about how the labor and delivery went. VERY fast. Last week Friday morning, I woke up feeling a little different---thought I was possibly having some contractions. People say that you 'just know' when you are in labor, but I had to second guess myself. My mom and I had appointments for pedicures at noon, so I called her up and said that we might need to cancel--that I would keep getting ready but call her in another hour. At 10:30, I made the decision to cancel. By 11:00, the contractions were more consistent--about 6-8 minutes apart. Matt came home from work--I sat down on the couch and began to time them. They quickly got more painful, longer, & closer together. I paged my midwife to tell her what was going on--she said that with the first pregnancy, it usually takes longer so if I was still breathing through contractions okay, she was comfortable telling me to stay home a little longer--that would be less time that I would have to spend at the hospital in labor.

By about 2:00, they were 3-4 minutes apart and quite painful so I decided that it was time to go to the hospital. I called her back--she said that she would meet us there! The car ride was horrible--I was in so much pain even between contractions--I kept telling Matt to avoid the bumps in the road--poor Matt, he was just trying to get us there. I was directly admitted--changed into a gown--my midwife checked me out and just laughed--she said 'you silly girl, you're fully dilated!' I had to make a decision to start pushing then, or she would allow me to get an epidural. Eventhough I felt like pushing and knew that an epidural might prolong things, I knew I wanted one. So we waited a painful 20 minutes for them to get it started--then another 20 minutes for it to kick in. Ahhh, thank goodness for modern medicine--I was able to relax , talk and smile through contractions, and even enjoy the whole process. My water was broken and the pushing began. Our midwife needed to check around to see if the head was coming out okay--she was shocked to have Daniel grab her finger! She had to push his hand back in--he was just trying to get out! :) After about 1 1/2 hours our little guy was here! Matt was awesome, and it was nice to have YaYa there for extra support.

My mom was waiting in the next room for the news. She was able to hear his first cries through the wall and come in soon after that to meet our man. We got a visit from Kelly, Matthew, & Gracie--Ryan, Jill, & Tryg--and Matt's parents. My dad and Scott were sad that they couldn't be there--they are away on business in Egypt this week. They are quite eager to meet Daniel in a couple of days.

Daniel is a little honey. I think he looks a lot like his dad. But he has my hands and feet (long fingers and toes!), my eyelashes, and maybe my nose. They change so much so we'll see what kind of look he grows into.

I am laughing because I started writing this post yesterday at 5:00--now its 1:00 the next day--yep, motherhood brings a few interruptions now and then, but our little guy is so worth it! We are pretty tired--now I know why people kept telling us to get sleep before he arrives! They weren't kidding!

Here are LOTS of pictures from our first week. Hope you enjoy!
