Where did this week go? Exactly one week ago our little guy entered the world. We love being parents, but this week has definitely been all about survival and figuring out 'life.' Daniel doesn't know the difference between day and night yet. Hopefully we will get a routine down sooner than later. He is a little suggle bug--loves to be held.
Some of you were asking about how the labor and delivery went. VERY fast. Last week Friday morning, I woke up feeling a little different---thought I was possibly having some contractions. People say that you 'just know' when you are in labor, but I had to second guess myself. My mom and I had appointments for pedicures at noon, so I called her up and said that we might need to cancel--that I would keep getting ready but call her in another hour. At 10:30, I made the decision to cancel. By 11:00, the contractions were more consistent--about 6-8 minutes apart. Matt came home from work--I sat down on the couch and began to time them. They quickly got more painful, longer, & closer together. I paged my midwife to tell her what was going on--she said that with the first pregnancy, it usually takes longer so if I was still breathing through contractions okay, she was comfortable telling me to stay home a little longer--that would be less time that I would have to spend at the hospital in labor.
By about 2:00, they were 3-4 minutes apart and quite painful so I decided that it was time to go to the hospital. I called her back--she said that she would meet us there! The car ride was horrible--I was in so much pain even between contractions--I kept telling Matt to avoid the bumps in the road--poor Matt, he was just trying to get us there. I was directly admitted--changed into a gown--my midwife checked me out and just laughed--she said 'you silly girl, you're fully dilated!' I had to make a decision to start pushing then, or she would allow me to get an epidural. Eventhough I felt like pushing and knew that an epidural might prolong things, I knew I wanted one. So we waited a painful 20 minutes for them to get it started--then another 20 minutes for it to kick in. Ahhh, thank goodness for modern medicine--I was able to relax , talk and smile through contractions, and even enjoy the whole process. My water was broken and the pushing began. Our midwife needed to check around to see if the head was coming out okay--she was shocked to have Daniel grab her finger! She had to push his hand back in--he was just trying to get out! :) After about 1 1/2 hours our little guy was here! Matt was awesome, and it was nice to have YaYa there for extra support.
My mom was waiting in the next room for the news. She was able to hear his first cries through the wall and come in soon after that to meet our man. We got a visit from Kelly, Matthew, & Gracie--Ryan, Jill, & Tryg--and Matt's parents. My dad and Scott were sad that they couldn't be there--they are away on business in Egypt this week. They are quite eager to meet Daniel in a couple of days.
Daniel is a little honey. I think he looks a lot like his dad. But he has my hands and feet (long fingers and toes!), my eyelashes, and maybe my nose. They change so much so we'll see what kind of look he grows into.
I am laughing because I started writing this post yesterday at 5:00--now its 1:00 the next day--yep, motherhood brings a few interruptions now and then, but our little guy is so worth it! We are pretty tired--now I know why people kept telling us to get sleep before he arrives! They weren't kidding!
Here are LOTS of pictures from our first week. Hope you enjoy!
